TTR125 FAQ - Wheels & Tires

Q:

17" super moto wheel questions

I have a 2000 TTR125L and am planning to purchase a 17 inch wheel set. My questions are:

  1. What are the differences between the 2000 and 2001 rear hub and 2002 and 2006 rear hubs. When I see the rear sprocket, they are different parts numbers.
  2. Will the newer 2002 – 2006 rear hub fit on my 2000 TTR-125L? Or should I get 17" rear wheel with 2000 – 2001 rear hub?
  3. Is there anything else that has to be modified or replaced, when I replace the original wheels 17"wheels?
  4. How long does it take to get delivered to LA?
A:

Here are some answers to your questions!

  1. The early TTRs (model years 2000 and 2001) had 8mm bolts in a smaller bolt circle attaching the sprocket. Those hubs were weak and many of them broke. The old style hub has been replaced with a new design (model year 2002 and newer) with 10mm bolts on a larger bolt circle.
  2. The new hub will fit your TTR just fine.
  3. Yes, you will need to install a new sprocket to fit the new hub with the new bolt pattern. Click here to see the sprockets we have available. Be sure and select a sprocket for the 2002 and newer models, they have the 10mm bolts.
  4. Allow about 2-3 weeks lead time for production of the wheels.

Why the odd rim sizes?

I want to go to larger rims on my 2005 TTR125L with the long swing arm. Stock wheel sizes are 16" rear and 19" front. I do not understand why I see 17"/17" kits - shouldn't it be 17"/20" for trail riding? It looks like there is room for 18"/21". I have hubs, etc - do not need anything fancy, just want larger size.

Also, will send you flywheel shortly - and assume you can take off less than the 20 oz's.

A:

We can build any size rims you want. The reason for the 17"/17" rims is because that is the size of real roadracing tires. So 17" wheels are the size of choice for supermoto or flattrack racing. Trail riding is of course a different story. I would not expect 18"/21" wheels to fit. The front tire would probably hit the bottom triple clamp at full compression of the suspension. I would advise some careful measuring before deciding you want the larger wheels. If you are sure they will fit we can build them with 17", 18", 19", 20" or 21" rims.

We can take off less than the full 20 oz. from the flywheel but I really do recommend taking the full weight off. There is no good reason not to.
