What is an RSS Feed?
RSS feeds are similar to mailing lists. They provide a way to get updates about any subject.
The difference with RSS is flexiblity. Instead of having to subscribe to a mailing list by giving out your email address you choose the RSS feeds you want to receive, and your RSS reader will check the feed everyday for new entries.
Advantages over mailing lists:
- Most mailing lists are very generic and will cover a whole website instead of a specific section of one.
- Adding and removing RSS feeds are similar to adding and removing bookmarks in your favorite web browser. No need to search for an un-subscribe link in emails or on a website.
- RSS feeds are Spam-Proof. If you don't want to receive notifications from a feed anymore, simply remove that feed!
- There are many web-services that offer user created/automated RSS feeds for websites that don't offer one. You can also subscribe to blogs, news sites, or whatever else you could think of.
How to use RSS feeds:
RSS feeds can be read by a large variety of programs including email programs, browser plugins, Windows/Mac programs, and web services such as Google Reader.
Simply click a link to a RSS feed you want to subscribe to below and copy the address in your address bar to your reader. Your RSS reader will automatically check that file every day for new items and will let you know when something new has shown up.
